  Community Day School Mission Statement:
Our purpose is to develop life-long learners by providing quality standards based education through a caring staff, supportive families, and an involved community. We strive to create an environment that promotes self-esteem, develops a sense of responsibility, and nurtures respect for others, thereby providing the basis for participation in a democratic society.

Introduction:
Community Day School affords an alternative educational option for elementary students experiencing excessive behavior problems, absenteeism, and/or academic failure. Students enter through the School Student Attendance Review Board (S.A.R.B.).Students are also enrolled through the expulsion process.
The State of California is currently developing policies to regulate community day schools. Therefore, this handbook is a “living document”, subject to change and revision in order to meet both local and state requirements.
Students are normally to be enrolled for a minimum of one semester. The criteria for exiting a Community Day School program is determined for each student on an individual basis established at the time of placement. The Community Day School staff, in cooperation with the child’s parent will decide when each student has met their placement goals in order to exit the program. The student must demonstrate cooperative, socially acceptable behavior, as well as a willingness to learn, to be considered for reinclusion to their home school.
It is very important that each student be entirely ready to transition to the general education program. Students may take different amounts of time to ready themselves for the return to their home schools. Some may be ready in a semester, whereas others may require an extended period to make the transition. The amount of time a student takes to progress through the program depends on the individual choices the student makes.

Community Day School operates on the Zero Tolerance philosophy for violence, drugs and alcohol. This means that we do not tolerate any form of drugs, alcohol or violence. Students who participate in these types of activities will be suspended or expelled. To anonymously report acts or threats of school violence:

Call      1-877-422-SAFE (7233) (Toll Free – 7 days per week, 24 hours per day)

By California State Education Code, Community Day School does not observe any minimum days. It is requested that you check the calendar and mark those days ahead of time. It is routine for a school district to require parents to provide students transportation home on days when bussing runs early in observation of minimum days (which CDS does not observe).

Annual Adjustment to Liability of Parent or Guardian for Willful Pupil Misconduct

Education Code Section 48904 (a)(1) provides that the parent or guardian of a minor is liable for all damages caused by the willful misconduct of the minor that results in the injury or death of any pupil, school district or private school employee, or school volunteer. The parent or guardian is also liable for damages to real or personal property belonging to a school employee, resulting from the willful misconduct of the minor. The liability of the parent or guardian is limited to $10,000, adjusted annually for inflation.

Section 48904 (a)(1) also specifies that the parent or guardian of a minor is liable for any reward, not exceeding $10,000 (adjusted annually for inflation) paid pursuant to Government Code Section 53069.5. Section 53059.5 allows local agencies to offer to pay a reward for information leading to the identification and apprehension of any person who willfully damages or destroys property, or whose willful misconduct results in injury or death to any person.
